About Awra Amba Community New Chapter Behavior and Development Building Multipurpose Association

The Awra Amba Community was founded in 1972 G.C. through the gathering of farmer members, based on the ideas conceived by Honorary Dr. Zumra Nuru. Its foundation rests on five core principles: (1) respecting women's equality; (2) respecting children's rights; (3) assisting and caring for people who are not fit for work due to health or old age, as well as raising, educating, and enabling orphaned children to become successful; (4) eliminating bad speech and practices; and (5) fostering comprehensive belongingness and solidarity by avoiding fragmented loyalties.

Starting from these fundamental ideas, between 1972 G.C. and 1985 G.C., we initially worked individually in our respective locations. When a vulnerable member was in need, we would gather and assist them by plowing, sowing, weeding, harvesting, and gathering the crops on their farm. Additionally, we received a large plot of land from two individuals, used it for cultivation, and channeled the resulting produce toward this charitable purpose, distributing the yield to the weak.

After years of this work, in 1986 G.C., believing that we could help even more vulnerable people if we organized as a cooperative society and worked together, we organized under a cooperative and continued to assist numerous weak individuals with minimal effort. From 1994 G.C. onward, all members began contributing one Birr each and established an income source by engaging in weaving work, which allowed us to support our vulnerable members through our own internal system.

To encourage the long-standing process of togetherness, love, concern, and mutual support among community members, and to better support those with limited capacity, we repeatedly requested official legal personality recognition. We finally received this recognition for the first time on October 18, 2006 G.C. from the Amhara National Regional State Justice Bureau, under the name "Awra Amba Community New Chapter Behavior and Development Building Multipurpose Association". Since then, we have carried out extensive work to the best of our ability.

Currently, the association is endeavoring to expand its charitable works nationally. To ensure that this good community experience is not confined only to Awra Amba, and to help create a generation that believes in work and discussion by sharing this experience with others, the association was registered with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Civil Society Organizations Authority on September 06, 2024 G.C. under Proclamation No. 1113/2011, with Registration Number 7406, and has been granted legal personality.

Since the community was founded, members have established love and peace by adhering to principles we believe are essential for a comfortable, peaceful life: weak and strong supporting one another, mutual understanding, and brotherhood, while eliminating bad thoughts and practices and implementing good ones. It is this experience we intend to share with others. As we often say, good values should not remain "a lamp under a basket."
